We’ve recently restored the roof and re-imprinted inside, replacing the rear windows and adding a floor to ceiling window beside the stairs. The traditional kitchen has a new blue lias floor and the utility room has been updated. The electrics and plumbing have been modernised and we’ve painted throughout.
The kitchen is the heart of the house, with a completely restored large oil fired 4 door pearl ash AGA adding to the warmth and cosiness of cooking or simply for standing by in winter or summer. The family kitchen table sits proudly in the middle of the ebb and flow of life as the day is mapped out or the evening completes and all that is offered is for your comfort and digestive activities. It is the most treasured and sat-in room of the house. You can imagine back in 1915 when the then owner of the house came up with the idea of United Dairies, supplying milk products to the soldiers in the WW1. His grandson visited us and we are part of one of the books ‘Milk Chronicles’ that he wrote about his heritage.
The ground floor meanders from room to room and there’s plenty of space for everyone to go to or be together or to be alone but always to relax and unwind.
First up is the kitchen conservatory. Designed for summer living it’s actually an all year round room and a perfect dining space with kitchen and sitting area overlooking the valley and fields. The large glass sliding folding doors open completely to offer on the East side access to the Dairy and Dairy Courtyard and on the South side a terrace leading to the gardens and farm land beyond. With its large lantern light and chandelier you can enjoy outdoor dining protected from the weather whilst watching the wildlife pass by. With a Miele gas hob, 900mm Miele electric oven and island unit with sink, fridge and dishwasher there’s everything you need to make and serve a meal.
Turning right and there’s the large cosy snug room with corner sofa and ottoman, large open inglenook fire place and TV with Sky for sports viewing. It’s a joy to relax and sit by the fire and there’s plenty of logs and firelighters. This is where you will see the large original blue lias stone flooring. This leads to the front hall and front door, which opens on to the front lawn.
Cross the front hall to the drawing room. It’s a simple, delightful, light, airy room with a solid oak floor, open fire place, sofas, beautiful furniture and a pair of South facing large glass French doors. The B&O wall hung CD player and speakers are connected to ceiling speakers in some of the other rooms - a rather beautifully designed relic set apart from the ever evolving technology that surrounds us.
Keep walking and a door opens into a stunning garden conservatory room, a study or afternoon tea room surrounded by sliding folding glass doors all around, which can be opened in summer and used as a covered outdoor space with shade to allow enjoyment and space of nature with views South and West. This is a unique space to retreat to in all seasons and weathers but especially to enjoy the afternoon evening sun and sunsets. It’s also used as a study great place to work.
Going back to the kitchen entrance and to one side of the entrance lobby is the newly floored boot and utility room, laundry and downstairs cloakroom. The WC has an old high level steel Roboro cistern made by Hodder & Sons Builders Frome 150 years ago, which we rescued from the outside dunny as part of the renovations.
Before taking the stairs to the first floor there is a movie room leading off the back hall with 55” TV [large screen and projector] and comfy sofa to view all your favourite movies, TV or whatever and a place to hang out after enjoying the lovely walks, woods and countryside. It also has an open firebox fire to add to the feel and relaxation.
The main bedroom has a super king bed and standalone bath. There’s a chest of drawers, large armoire and a beautiful dressing table facing south overlooking the valley and stream below. There’s a lobby space, with built in wardrobe, which leads in to the newly fitted bathroom with 1800mm walk in shower.
The second main bedroom faces East. It’s in the oldest part of the house and has a super king bed and elegant feel. When we bought the place we uncovered the original 16th century oak mullioned window, which is now blocked up again.
Next door is the third bedroom with twin beds that can be made up as a super king depending on requirements. Ample cupboards and hanging it also has a dressing table space. Windows face South and North.
Completing this end of the house is the limestone bathroom with separate shower, large inbuilt bath, washbasins and cupboards.
The fourth bedroom is at the other end of the house and has a super king size bed, which can be made up as twin beds. Beside it is the third bathroom with steam room - a place to relax and let the muscles release and let go.
The gardens are on different levels reflecting the fact that the house is built into the side of the hill. To the West is a private enclosed white garden with terraces, patio area and tiered banks. From here is a secret steel rose encrusted door with direct access to the amazing outdoor swimming pool area and spa house for your utmost relaxation and enjoyment.
In front is the top lawn with beds and steps leading to the lower lawn and fields beyond. There’s a croquet lawn to the right which takes you to Yorkie’s wood, which we planted 30 years ago, and a path down along the edge of the fields to the stream at the bottom of the valley. The renovated farm buildings are on your left and available if you’re planning an amazing event, such as a wedding, naming ceremony, family reunion, birthday celebration or wedding anniversary. The croquet lawn has space for a large marquee and we have contacts with suppliers for setting up and catering for functions.
Leaving the white garden, as a guest of the house you have sole access to the newly constructed swimming pool during the agreed hours. This is a wonder. Large Oak doors let you through to a bath stone loggia which is the gracious classical style colonnade that fronts the pool house in the North East corner of the cloistered walled garden. Ahead of you is a private 10m x 5m tiled swimming pool, with automatic safety and thermal cover that keeps everyone out and the heat in, which means you can enjoy swimming in water in upwards of 32 degrees. On the South side it opens up with views through the apple trees and over the hedge to the fields and woods beyond. Roses abound.
The pool house has a sitting area with electrically operated sliding doors and semi kitchen space. What you’ll immediately notice is the finish of microcement and marmorite providing a seamless and glowing background to all the rooms. The steam room, changing room, shower and WC are just inside. Underfloor heating throughout makes it a perfect place for a stop moment, taking tea, reading a book or hitching up to the internet - the perfect place to be when the sun shines and you feel like you don’t want to stay indoors any longer.
Add The Dairy option: The Dairy has an entrance from the small enclosed terrace beside the kitchen conservatory and sleeps 2 plus a sofa bed, sitting area, table and bathroom. It's a great option if you're a party of 10.
